Air conditioning tips
If there is a hot day forecast, then pre-cool your house the night before. This is especially effective if your house has a high thermal mass such as solid brick. This will allow your air conditioner to work at its optimum during the cool evening, saving power and wear and tear on the unit. It also allows the unit to keep on top of the heat load as it begins to warm up during the heat of the day.
What’s the best size air conditioner for my home or office?
There are certain factors to consider when choosing the right size for your home or office such as if the room is heavily shaded then reduce capacity by 10 percent. If the room is very sunny, increase capacity by 10 percent. If more than two people regularly occupy the room, add 600 BTUs for each additional person. If the unit is used in a kitchen, increase capacity by 4,000 BTUs. Consider where you install the unit. If you are mounting an air conditioner near the corner of a room, look for a unit that can send the airflow in the right direction. What is a Heat Pump?
A heat pump is a very clever device that extracts heat energy from a volume of air and transfers it to the water. So the water gets warmer, whilst the air gets cooler.
Are heat pumps new?
No, they share the same basic technology as refrigerators and air conditioners which were invented over 100 years ago. Heat pumps were first manufactured over 50 years ago and in many regions of the world such as the Southern United States and Italy. Heat pumps have been popular and well known for decades.
How much noise does a heat pump make?
The SirAir integrated heat pump geyser, one of the quietest heat pumps you can buy. It has an outdoor unit rated at 48 dB. Normal conversation is 60-70dB. The Sirair retrofit heat pump is 53 dB, still perfectly quiet enough for any home or office.
What is the average life-span of a Heat Pump?
It can vary, depending on how much the system is used and how regularly it is checked or serviced. Generally, the average life-span of units built in the 1970s and 1980s is about 15 years, but individual units may vary and last much longer depending on use and how well they are maintained. Newer units are expected to last even longer.
Can I cover my outdoor Heat Pump?
If the cover was far enough above the top of the unit as to not impede the air flow discharging from the unit, and if it doesn’t interfere with servicing of the unit, then it could help protect the unit from the elements like snow, ice, falling branches and leaves. But it really isn’t needed. Heat Pumps are designed for outdoor use.
Why are Heat Pumps better than other forms of heating?
Heat pumps offer many benefits over other forms of heating. Firstly they are much cheaper to run giving up to 4 times more heat than you pay for, they can be used all year round for heating and cooling. They don’t pollute our atmosphere because they use ozone friendly refrigerants.

What if I can’t remove my current geyser?
If you already have a geyser in your house, and don’t wish to or cant replace it with the full integrated system. The best option for you would be the SIRAIR retrofit heat pump, which connects to your existing geyser and does the same job as the integrated heat pump.

How efficient are Pool Heat Pumps?
20% of the heating energy comes from an electrical supply. The remaining 80% of the Heat energy come from the surrounding air. What is COP and what does it mean in terms of Heat pumps?
COP stands for coefficient of performance and it is the ratio between the power the heat pump supplies to the swimming pool and the power that it consumes. The higher you COP the better your heating equipment performs and the more your electricity bill falls.
- A COP=5 (with an external temperature of 15ºC) means that you consume 1kWh and that the swimming pool gets 5kWh, thus saving you 4kWh. This is why the heat pump is so efficient.
- However this COP varies according to the external condition. Now a heat pump takes in the energy from the external air and through a heat exchange system, it returns these thermal units to the pool. Consequently, the colder it is outside, the harder it is for the heat pump to supply the heat. The performance (COP) thus reduces if the external temperature falls. But it is still more effective than most alternatives out there.
How do Solar Geysers Work?
The Low pressure solar geyser uses vacuum tubes. It is a double sided glass tube with a vacuum between the two glass layers. Normally, The inside glass layer has been given a spray layer which absorbs the Ultra-violet rays of the sun. The water fills the vacuum tubes and gets heated by absorbing the ultra violet rays of the sun. The vacuum converts the ultra violet rays into heat. As the water heats, the warmer water slowly rises and is replaced by cooler water which is stored in the cavity of the storage tank.
What if there is no sun or if it’s raining?
The heat output of the solar water heater is reduced on overcast days, but it will still be able to provide heating. About a quarter of the sun’s energy gets through the clouds. The Sirair Solar Geyser has space for a heating element to improve the temperature if there is not enough sun.
What is the difference between low and high pressure solar geysers?
High Pressure: When water is supplied to your house via a Municipal supply line pressured via a pump system. The water is being forced to your house by a pump (pressure) via a water line. Low Pressure: Most likely found on farms. Most farms have a supply tank that is lifted off the ground. Once a water pipe is opened, gravity forces the water from the tank, down the water pipe and into the house. Low Pressure is basically gravity fed water supply.
How much maintenance is required?
